The Berrien Springs Discovery Academy has a long standing tradition of being one of the best Alternative Education programs in the state. We offer a no nonsense approach to on-line education to accommodate today’s At-Risk student population. Flexible scheduling, self-paced courses, access from home and a success driven and caring staff all come together to help students achieve success.
We offer two different tracks to achieve a high school diploma. A traditional 29 credit diploma which meets the BSHS criteria for graduation and the Discovery Academy diploma track which is 22 credits. Both are MMC accredited diplomas. Additionally, qualifying students may also take part in Career and Technical Education classes and participate in Dual Enrollment classes at local colleges. We also allow students to participate in work-study if they are able to obtain gainful employment.
We now offer our students career readiness courses as well as a leadership class. Students will learn how to build resumes and practice interviews. The courses address work place professionalism and conduct. These classes help students to be more successful while participating in the Discovery Academy Job Fair. The Discovery Academy Job Fair is hosted each spring and is one of the largest job fairs for high school students in southwestern-lower Michigan. It is a great opportunity to utilize what they have learned in the classroom and talk to local employers and business owners.
Many of our graduates have chosen to further their education at technical or trade schools, community colleges, and universities. Some are pursuing a career in the military, and some have entered the work force straight out of high school.
We, at the Discovery Academy, understand the many issues that can face today’s student. Sometimes things in life are just too much for students to continue on a traditional path. That is where we come in. We have a very high success rate with students who have dropped out, or are on the verge of dropping out. Many students that come to us are behind in credits and need a way to catch up. This is where the self-paced aspect of our program really come into play. We specialize in At-Risk students. Our staff members all have an almost uncanny ability to reach students previously thought unreachable.
